Wyatt Carmichael

Introduction

Hello, my name is Wyatt Carmichael. I’m 19 years old (born November 24, 2005) and currently in my second year at Wichita State University (WSU), where I’m majoring in Business Marketing. I have a lot of hobbies, but one passion has stuck with me more than anything else—Film.

Early Creativity

I wasn’t always into film, but I had hobbies as a kid that eventually led me there. When I was younger, I made trickshot videos around my house. I’d film, edit them to music, and post them on Instagram. To my surprise, I built a following of over 1,000 people by the age of 13. I even got a Sponsership from a Frisbee Company.
I was also a huge YouTube fan growing up—into Minecraft, Pokémon, and all that—stuff I still enjoy today. Around middle school, my sister and I began acting in musicals with Music Theatre Wichita. I did quite a few productions, and while I thought they were fun, I realized I didn’t really love acting or singing. I stopped after 7th grade, though my sister continued until she graduated.

Photography & Skateboarding

By 8th grade, many of my friends had gotten into skateboarding. I wasn’t exactly good at it, but I loved the culture. That’s when I picked up photography and videography instead. My mom had an old Canon Rebel T3, which I started using. I even bought a fisheye lens and began shooting skate photos and short clips.
Then quarantine hit. I lost most of my friends, gave up on skateboarding, and felt stuck. But that’s when I discovered the thing that would stay with me for life: MOVIES. Film became my escape, my obsession, and my future.

High School & Film Studies

In high school, I enrolled in every Film Studies class offered and also joined the Tallgrass Film Association’s EFP Program during the summers. Sophomore year, I met one of my closest collaborators, MD, who shared my passion for film. We instantly clicked, working on multiple projects together.
He introduced me to the NYU/Yellowbrick Film & TV Industry Essentials course, and with his help, I received a 75% scholarship. That course gave me a professional-level insight into the film industry and confirmed that this was the world I wanted to be part of.
By junior year, MD and I tackled one of our biggest projects: creating video projections for the school musical. It was a massive challenge but one of my proudest accomplishments.

Beyond Film in High School

Outside of film, I stayed busy in band, theater, and multiple clubs. I continued working on tech and projections for musicals and, because I had maxed out the film classes available, my theater teacher let me join the advanced theater class—assigning me custom film projects to keep pushing my skills.
I graduated in the Class of 2024 from Wichita East High School. I applied to places like NYU and USC but ultimately chose WSU—a smarter financial choice.

College & Career Goals

I decided not to major in Film, because I felt I had already gained a solid foundation from high school, Tallgrass, and my NYU course. Instead, I chose Business Marketing, believing that understanding the business side of film would be just as valuable as the creative side.
Since high school, I’ve also been working at Regal Movie Theaters, which has kept me close to the film world.
As for the future? I’m not exactly sure what path I’ll take in the film industry. But I know this: I’ll keep pushing forward, keep creating, and keep sharing my passion for movies until I make my dream a reality.
